On 24 July, 1969 while on an operation in the "Arizona Territory" the Company perimeter west of the hamlet of An Bang in Duc Duc District was hit with a barrage of 82 mm enemy mortar rounds, and several Chicom hand grenades were thrown into the Marine defensive positions. PFC Tate was killed, eight additional men were wounded by the hostile fire including LCpl Gaeth requiring medical evacuation.
After being treated for his wounds, LCpl Gaeth returned to his unit suffering a perforated eardrum on 15 September 1969, evacuated to the USNH in DaNang and transferred to the USNH in Guam.
