SOUTH BEND - Dwight Shannon Nolen passed away on February 12, 2013, in St. Augustine, Florida. He was born July 20, 1917, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Shannon and Ermyle Belle (Jackson) Nolen, and was a lifelong resident of this area. On October 11, 1941, he married his sweetheart, Donna Belle Plummer, and they shared 71 years of wedded bliss. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eleanor Belle (Forest) Walters; two brothers, Forrest Ray (Maxine) Nolen and Kenneth Devon Nolen (Fanny); and a grandson, Michael S. Nolen Jr. Surviving family includes his wife, Donna Nolen; sons, Gary (Katie) Nolen of South Bend, IN, Wayne (Judy) Nolen of Eaton Rapids, MI, and Michael Nolen of Osceola, IN; a daughter, Linda (Roger) Mullins of St. Augustine Beach, FL; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Dwight was a graduate of Lakeville High School, class of 1935. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the USS Monitor, an LSV5 ship, as a First Machinist Mate from l943-l945. He received many medals. He worked for the Bendix Corporation and retired in 1974 after 33 years. He worked as a Tool and Die maker and was the Chief Gage Maker upon his retirement. Dwight & Donna loved to travel. They traveled the United States and Europe to explore many places and create many good memories. He was an avid historian and traced his and Donna's roots back hundreds of years. Dwight wrote many accounts of his life and shared them with family and friends. He had fond memories of time spent at the Olive Branch Church and of the one-room school where he attended grade school. He also shared many stories of his friend, Lew Watkins, who was blind and operated a General Store in the Olive Branch area. After retirement Dwight and Donna spent their winters in warmer climates including Pharr, TX, and St. Augustine, FL. They also maintained a summer residence in Plymouth, IN. In retirement he took up golf, learned about the computer, and did research on the internet. He will be sorely missed by family and friends, as Dwight never knew a stranger. He was admired for his compassion. He was a loyal friend and father to his children and family. Services will be held at 11 am Saturday, February, 23, at the Olive Branch Church, with visitation one hour before the services. Interment will be at the Porter Rea Cemetery, Potato Creek State Park, North Liberty, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Olive Branch Church, 22750 Osborne Road, Lakeville, IN 46536. The family would like to thank Pastor Drake and the Olive Branch Church friends for their prayers and assistance.
