Dr. John Anthony Scigliano, PhD, of Myersville, passed away Friday, February 08, 2013, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital after suffering a sudden medical emergency. He was 93 yrs. old.

Dr. Scigliano was born to brave immigrant parents, Tony and Louise (Ruma) Scigliano, who traveled by ship all the way from Italy to America in the early 1900's. Thrilled to become US citizens – they were proud to take an active role in their adopted country. Each of them worked hard and contributed much to their community. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska at the time John was born on October 30th, 1919.

John was the first of his family to go to college, enrolling during the depths of the depression and graduating in 1941 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Creighton University in Omaha. After college he entered the US Navy and later he moved east to teach at the University of Maryland where he went on to earn a Master's Degree in Bacteriology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacy (Analytical Chemistry).

Dr. Scigliano was recruited and had a 32 year career with the U.S. Public Health Service. As one of the United States seven uniformed services, the USPHS Commissioned Corps fills public health leadership and service roles within federal government agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Scigliano's job was to conduct scientific research for these agencies. As the former Executive Secretary for the FDA-PHS Psychotomimetic Agents Advisory Committee he worked as a Consultant for The Pharmaceutical Sciences Center for Studies of Narcotic and Drug Abuse at N.I.M.H.

A significant part of his career was dedicated to researching the safety and therapeutic potential of 'drugs of abuse' – principally LSD, Psilocybin and Marijuana. Most importantly he pioneered many new drugs to combat heart disease, cancer, mental health issues and more. He established set standards and quality control measures for pharmaceuticals that are still in use today.

Dr. Scigliano was responsible for establishing the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in the FDA. In 1973 he received the USPHS Meritorious Service Award for his dedication and important contributions to science. In 1977 he was honored with the Creighton University, School of Pharmacy Alumni Award as well. Upon his retirement from the USPHS he had achieved the rank of Captain.

Together with his brother Joe and his sister Betty, he established the John A. Scigliano Scholarship which is intended to recruit students for Creighton University for pursuit of careers in certain fields of the medical sciences. This was only one of a number of scholarships he created and supported over the years.

John was a past President of the Myersville, MD Lions Club as well as being a member in good standing with the American Legion in Funkstown, MD.

During his retired years John continued learning by reading scientific journals and books, along with corresponding to friends, working with his various scholarship programs, gardening and doing crossword puzzles.

John was preceded in death by his parents, as well as by his adored brother Joseph and sister Elizabeth of Omaha. In 2004 John lost his beloved wife Alice Horine Scigliano – a partner who had loved and supported him for nearly 60 years.

John is now survived by his two faithful children… twins: Christopher Scigliano of Middletown, MD and Carol Scigliano of Bel Air, MD.

In addition, John leaves behind three beautiful & talented granddaughters that he was very proud of: Brandie Bittle Tillman of Forest Hill, MD, Gina Scigliano Harris of Hedgesville, WV, and Toni M. Scigliano of Myersville, MD.

He was very blessed to have six wonderful and precious great grandchildren: Zoë, Talen, Ada, Lena, Autumn and Madison.

Every time somebody would mention to John how intelligent he was he would respond by saying ""No, I'm not that smart – I just worked very hard"". The motto that he wanted to pass on to all young people was this: ""never abandon your pursuit – do not give up when there are bumps in the road"".

His strong work ethic (which he felt he inherited from his parents) and his gifted intellectual abilities made the world a better place…and in the end there is no better legacy than that.

Funeral services will be held at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home at 31 E. Main St. in Middletown on Wed., February 13, 2013 at noon. A burial will follow at the Mt Zion United Methodist Cemetery in Myersville, MD.
