CAPT Ballard, a merchant and sea capton, married Elizabeth Gibbons(Gibbins), of Yorktown, Virginia. John made his will December 24, 1744. The will was proven on September 16, 1745. His will mentioned his wife, Elizabeth and his children Thomas, John, Robert, William, Catherine, Elizabeth and Anne. John Ballard was a merchant in Yorktown, Virginia and a Captain of the Militia.

His father was Lt Col Thomas Ballard, b-1654 Middle Plantation (Williamsburg) d- 11 Jun 1711, Middle Plantation. His mother was katherine Hubbard Ballard, b about 1660, Essex Co, Va, d- 26 sep 1706, Hampton, York Co., Va.

A family Bible provided information on the Ballard's children according to a decipher:
John Ballard and Elizabeth (Gibbons) Ballard were married: (?) 20th 1724 (Sunday) by Rev. Wm. Francis Fontaine
1. Catherine Ballard b: 16 Jan 1725 (It looks as if she married Samuel Boush July 7th 1745
2. Thomas Ballard b: 4 Jul 1728
3. John Ballard b: 24 Sept 1730
4. Robert Ballard b: 8 Aug 1733
5. Elizabeth Ballard b: 15 Dec 1735
6. Elizabeth Ballard ("2nd daughter of this name") b: 8 Oct 1737
7. Anne Ballard b: 20 Aug 1741
8. William Ballard b: 31 Oct 1743

The National Park Service has restored his home (Lor 54) on Nelson Street, in Yorktown, after they purchase the home from the Blow estate in Oct 1968. Capt Ballard occupied the home from 1727 to 1744.
