Erma M. DePestel, 93, died Saturday, March 07, 2009 in the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby.
• • Erma was born on February 17, 1916 to Henry and Aline (Van Otegham) VanSteenkiste in Green Valley, Minnesota. She was raised on a farm near Taunton, Minnesota, and attended country school. Following her education, she helped on the family farm.
On September 6, 1938 she was united in marriage to John DePestel at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton.
Following their marriage, they resided in Taunton for several years before moving to a farm near Porter. They farmed there until 1962 when they moved into Porter. At this time, Erma began working at the hospital in Canby as the laundry supervisor, retiring in 1984.
On October 12, 1985, John passed away. Erma continued to live in Porter until 2000 when she moved to the Schwartz Home in Canby. She has spent the last three years as a resident of Sylvan Court Nursing Home.
Erma was a member of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton until its recent closure. She then became a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby. She was a member of the CCW and taught CCD and belonged to Bible study groups throughout her life.
Erma loved quilting, sewing, cooking and baking. She also gave much of herself volunteering and doing charity work. Erma was a loving mother and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Erma was preceded in death by her husband John; parents; son-in-law Emmett Jerzak; one sister and three brothers.
