Jay Smith White was born Jan. 20, 1868, he married Laura Matilda Gillette on April 8, 1891, they had 3 children and 1 on the way when HE died. His obituary was published in the Utica Morning Herald on Friday January 22, 1897 as follows: The funeral of Jay Smith White , whose death was announced in the Herald yesterday, will take place this morning at 9 o'clock from his home 495 Main Street, New York Mills. Mr. white was born in Apalachin, Toga county in 1869. He was educated at the Cortland normal school. After his graduation he was engaged in the produce business with his father at Apalachin and afterward at Oswego. He went to New York mills in 1893 to take charge of the school at the upper part of the village, and was one of the best principals the school ever had. His thoughtfulness and efficiency were shown by the improvements the school made under his direction. Mr. White was a member of the M.E. church, was at one time member of its official board, and took a deep interest in religious matters. He was a man of broad ideas and strong convictions. Thru his many excellent qualities he gained many friends. His wife and three small children have the sympathy of the community. Besides his family and parents the deceased leaves three sisters, Mrs. Orville Tracy of South Apalachin, and misses Lena and Amy White of Apalachin and two brothers Ralph and James of Apalachin. The death was caused by congestion of the brain. Died - White - New York Mills, N.Y. Wednesday Jan. 20, 1897, Jay smith White age 28years 1 month and 22 days"
