Rodney "Todd" Watson was born in Jamestown North Dakota. Rodney was the second child of Clarence and Hennie Watson. When Rodney was young, the family moved to Modesto California. Rodney graduated from Modesto High School and attended Modesto Junior College. He was on the Modesto Junior College Basketball team and won the Junior College Championship in boxing in the 135 lbs weight division.

He was a pilot of P-38 and P-51 airplanes, serving as a member of the Army Air Corps in WWII. He flew over 100 missions logging over 300 hours of combat time.

In December of 1946, Rodney and Francis Bruot were married, seven years later, they moved to Warden Washington where they raised their family. Rodney was a construction worker and later farmer.

Throughout his life, Rodney loved hunting and fishing. His lifelong hobby was taxidermy.
