Charles Edward Engelmann, 79, of Caldwell went to his heavenly home on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Copperas Hollow Health and Rehabilitation Center in Caldwell after a gradual decline in health. He was surrounded and supported by his family and caregivers during the last days of his life.

Charles was born in Burleson County on December 24, 1933 to Herman and Mary Engelmann. He spent his entire lifetime in this area except for a short stint in the US Army. He attended several country schools then completed his education at Caldwell High School.

He was active in many organizations- Burleson County Hospital Board, County Fair Board, Burleson County Saddle Club, Cooks Point 4-H Club, Warren Lodge #56 AF & AM, American Legion Post 451 and Providence Baptist Church. Charles was instrumental in creating the Southern Blackmouth Curr Dog Registry.

For many years he bred, raised trained and hunted Blackmouth Curr Dogs. He enjoyed traveling to hunts and dog trials in Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana.

During the 1970's, Charles and a group of parents started the Burleson County 4-H Horse Club. Under his leadership the club was very active and successful. Several Members qualified for the district and state shows.

Charles was a member of the Burleson County Saddle Club and served as its president for one term. He also served as co-captain of the drill team that performed throughout the state and at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He participated in local parades with his patriotic covered wagon pulled by a team of draft mules (Kate and Betty). These included: Burleson County Fair Parade, Snookfest Parade and Somerville Homecoming Parade.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Albert and James and sisters, Esther and Laura.

Survivors include his wife of more than 56 years, Marie (Kachtik) Engelmann; three daughters, Carol Johnston, Barbara Clay and Nancy Singletary; a brother, Milton Engelmann; a sister, Kathryn Korth; several grandchildren; great grandchildren and a great great grandson.

Services will be held at 10 am Tuesday, March 19 at Providence Baptist Church with Dr. Malcolm Bain officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors under the auspices of VFW Post 4458.
