Luther Douglas Haney was drafted on 14 March 1944 and sent to Camp Walters, Mineral Wells, Texas. He was later at Ft. Benning, GA, where he hitched a ride to Atlanta to see his father. He had earlier worked at a Dallas radio station, and was assigned to the Signal Corps at Camp Crowder, Missouri. His wife with her two sons, age about 4 & 5, stayed nearby at a cabin at Truitts Cave in Lanagan, MO.

Luther's Military Occupational Speciality was Intercept Operator, and he was training in German codes and awaiting deployment when the European Theater began winding down.

He then began training in Japanese codes and was assigned to the 60th Signal Radio Intelligence Company at Vent Hill Farms, VA, a top secret base that "didn't exist". His wife with her two dutiful sons found a place to live nearby in Warrenton, VA in a former girls school converted to apartments.

While awaiting deployment, he was monitoring Japanese short wave communications at a station in an old barn at Vent Hill Farms. (This is mentioned because, when his son was working in Virginia about ten years ago from the year of 2013 in which this is written, he located Vent Hill Farms, about half way between Warrenton, VA and Manassas and the barn was still there)!

The base was closing down and being converted to an industrial park and the FAA control center for D.C, Baltimore, and Andrews AFB. He was also able to find their apartment they lived in Warrenton, now a Sunshine Senior Citizens Home. Luther was discharged on April 28, 1946. He was asked to stay on with assignment to the OSS (later CIA), but preferred to be a civilian again. - P.H.
