William L. Nitterhouse was a son of Barnett and Ida Wingate Nitterhouse. He married Bertha Almeda Karper on April 28, 1910. Bill and Bert became the parents of five children.
A mason by trade, he began making concrete blocks in March of 1923 in the garage of his home on Lortz Ave., using a $60 machine purchased from the Sears Roebuck Catalog. Making blocks was a new idea in the 1920's and the only local source for bricks was expensive, in the opinion of Bill Nitterhouse. So he decided to make them himself.
In 1934, is eldest son, Theodore K. (T.K.) Nitterhouse, became his partner. Bill's sons Jimmy and Kenneth also worked for the family business. T.K.'s son oldest son joined the company in 1951.
The small company that Bill Nitterhouse established eventually became the award winning Nitterhouse Concrete Products, Inc., which provides materials for structures of all sizes. Throughout the U.S., numerous homes, schools, parking garages, major airports, hospitals and more are made with Nitterhouse precast concrete. In 1999, the company was divided into two family owned businesses: Nitterhouse Concrete, Inc. and Nitterhouse Masonry. Both remain Nitterhouse owned and operated, a strong legacy of William Lewis Nitterhouse.
Bill was a member of the Chambersburg Club and the Chambersburg BPOE (Elks Club). According to his nephew Earl, Bill enjoyed roller skating and was quite good at it.
He died at his home (501 S. Fourth St) after a 4 month battle with stomach cancer.
