After a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Navy as Master Chief Petty Officer, Mr. Ayers retired from the U.S. Navy in August 1984 after serving 30 years. He came to know the Lord on Nov. 24, 2003, was baptized and joined the church family of First Baptist Church Concord, Knoxville, TN.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters; Mae Ayers and Gladys Ayers McInturff.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jean Ayers of Knoxville; two sons, Eugene W. Jr. and William McKinley Ayers; three sisters, Maude Foster of Erwin, Juanita Stancil of Erwin and Mildred Butler of Erwin. *Source- Johnson City Press, Aug. 6, 2004, Page 2
