HELEN MARKWARDT

Helen M. Markwardt, age 95, formerly of the town of Manitowoc, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 3, 2005 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church, 502 N. Eighth St., Manitowoc. The Rev. Dr. Matt Sauer will officiate with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, Hwy. 310, Manitowoc.

Helen was born March 17, 1910 in the town of Two Rivers, daughter of the late Wencel and Mary Mleziva Fogeltanz. She attended the Rangeline School, St. Luke's School and the Two Rivers High School.

On June 24, 1930, Helen was married to Elmer Markwardt at St. Luke's Catholic Church Parsonage in Two Rivers. Elmer preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1987.

She was a member of the School Section Homemakers, Manitowoc County Farm Bureau, First Presbyterian Church and was a former Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church. Helen enjoyed playing bingo and cards with her friends and cooking her good Bohemian food. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law: Don (Grace) Markwardt of Manitowoc; Dale (Leslie) Markwardt of Manitowoc; seven grandchildren: Deb (Robert) Bonk of Manitowoc; Joan (Charles) Fritz of Billings, Mont.; Nancy (Paul) Rettew of Madison, Va.; Jeffrey (Jennifer) Markwardt of Rochester, Minn.; Sarah (Mark) Rysticken of Manitowoc; Lynn (James) Marsh of Delafield; Brian (Kate) Markwardt of Manitowoc; eight great-grandchildren: Isaac and Eric Fritz; Emma and Kathryn Rysticken; Evan and Sydney Marsh; Aidan and Megan Markwardt; one niece: Karen Markwardt Jones of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister and brother-in-law: Libby (Anton) Ruminski; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Lester (Violet) Markwardt; and one niece: Beth Markwardt.

Relatives and friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated for the First Presbyterian Church or the charity of the donor's choice. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is serving the family.

At ten o'clock at the St. Luke's parsonage at Two Rivers, the marriage of Miss Helen Marie Vogeltanz, daughter of Wenzel Vogeltanz of Route 1, Two Rivers, became the bride of Elmer Joseph Markwardt, son of Charles Markwardt, Route 7, Manitowoc, with Rev. Father Hugo officiating. Close friends of the couple gathered for the pronouncing of the marriage vows.

At the bride's home immediately after the ceremony a reception was held for twenty relatives and friends and a dinner was served. Miss Violet Hamernik was the maid of honor and Miss Irene Bienzow, the bridesmaid. Lester Markwardt was the best man with Leo Jindra as the other attendant. Mr. and Mrs. Markwardt are leaving on Wednesday on a two weeks' honeymoon to the northern part of the state and Michigan and will be at home to friends after July 4, at Route 7, Manitowoc, where the groom is engaged in farming.

A wedding dance is being held this evening at the Sogge hall for relatives and friends. Mrs. Joseph Krueger of Detroit, Michigan and Charles Hacker of Milwaukee were out of town guests for the ceremony.
