Henry Stanford Grimes was the son of Wilson Grimes and Rachel Kerr(Carr). He was born near Clifton, Tennesse. He married Ellen Elizabeth Biffle on Feb. 7, 1861 in Wayne County, Tennessee.

Shortly after marrying he joined the confederate army. He served in Second (Smith's) Cavalry & Second (Biffle's) Battalion Cavalry. On Oct. 23, 1863 he was captured near Bledsoe County, Tennessee and was a POW for the remainder of the Civil War.

Henry and Ellen were the parents of four children: Dr. George Crawford Grimes; Laura Belle Grimes Kittrell; Elizabeth Jane Grimes Ellison Canida and Albert Wilson Grimes.

After Ellen passed away Henry married Fannie Tinnon.

Henry and Ellen are buried in the Grimes-Shull Cemetery just north of what was at the time the family farm.
