Shortly after marrying he joined the confederate army. He served in Second (Smith's) Cavalry & Second (Biffle's) Battalion Cavalry. On Oct. 23, 1863 he was captured near Bledsoe County, Tennessee and was a POW for the remainder of the Civil War.
Henry and Ellen were the parents of four children: Dr. George Crawford Grimes; Laura Belle Grimes Kittrell; Elizabeth Jane Grimes Ellison Canida and Albert Wilson Grimes.
After Ellen passed away Henry married Fannie Tinnon.
Henry and Ellen are buried in the Grimes-Shull Cemetery just north of what was at the time the family farm.
