Jerry Edward Hood of Landstuhl, Germany, formally of Buchanan, Georgia passed away suddenly at his home in Germany on Sunday, September 25, 2011.

Jerry was born in Aberdeen, Mississippi, the son of the late Billie Rieves Hood and Ruby Gebhart Hood. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, an Educator for over 33 years, and former Mayor of Buchanan. He graduated from Mississippi State and only lacked his dissertation from earning his doctorate in Agronomy from Texas A&M when teaching called out to him. He began his teaching career in 1977 with the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) at the Career Center in Darmstadt, Germany teaching Horticulture. Since teaching was not his original major he added Education courses during several summers. He attended Concordia College in Nebraska while living with his brother, Richard and his family.
When the Career Center closed he moved to Darmstadt Middle School. In 1988 Jerry became an Assistant Principal at Wiesbaden American Middle School. There he met his future wife, Angie. They married in 1991. In 1993 with transfer orders to move to Okinawa they decided to return to Angie's hometown, Buchanan. Jerry became an Assistant Principal at Buchanan Primary and Buchanan Junior High Schools. In 1995 their daughter, Callie, was born. In 1999 he became Principal of the newly formed Buchanan Elementary School. In 2004 he moved to Haralson County Middle School. This was one of his most rewarding years in his education career. While at HCMS for only one year, Jerry worked with the staff and students to make great academic gains.
In 2005 DoDDS called once again. With an opportunity to share the overseas experience with his daughter, Callie, the family moved to Italy when Angie received a job offer. By the end of their first year in Naples Jerry was back in the classroom teaching. In January 2007 Jerry was selected to become an Assistant Principal at Naples Elementary School. During the next three years Jerry split his time between being a classroom teacher and Assistant Principal.
In 2010 Jerry began another adventure in DoDDS with a move back to Germany. He always said it was like going home when he returned there. Jerry's last teaching assignment was at Smith Elementary School in Baumholder, Germany.
Throughout his teaching career Jerry taught a wide range of subjects including Horticulture, Computers, 5th grade Social Studies, Math and Health, along with over 20 years as an Assistant Principal or Principal.
Jerry resided full time in Buchanan for 12 years. During that time he was an active member of the community while working with The Haralson County Historical Society, The Haralson County Chamber of Commerce, and Leadership Haralson. Jerry was elected to two terms as Mayor of Buchanan; he relinquished his post when the family moved to Italy. He oversaw the completion of a new City Hall/Police Department building and helped bring new businesses to his beloved adopted hometown.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Roger D. (Buddy) Kimball.
Survivors include wife, Angie Kimball Hood; daughter, Callie Hood both of Landstuhl, Germany; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Bobbie Hood, of Aiken, SC; nephews. Robert (Marilyn) Hood of Vancouver, WA, Patrick Hood of Mauldin, SC; mother-in- law, Yvonne Kimball; brothers-in-law, Rodney D. (Mary Ellen) Kimball of Buchanan and Roger D.
