He was born in Round Bay, Nova Scotia, the son of Makaska and Annie (Perry) Hagar. He moved to the US in 1923 and married Ethelyn D (Tower) Hagar. When he was 16, he was working on the fishing schooner, the Arthur James, when it was rammed by the Camden in Boston Harbor on Oct. 31, 1916. His father was the only person killed in the accident. Until his retirement, he worked as a carpenter and he made beautiful furniture, also.
