Mrs. Ada May Smith Chafin, age 87, of Route 2, Cleveland, Va. passed away early Sunday morning in a Lebanon, Va. hospital after an extended illness.

Born in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Jasper and Nancy Kendrick Smith. She was a member of the Independence Baptist Church and was the widow of Andy B. Chafin.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Edith Crabtree of Cleveland, Va.; three sons, Bernard Chafin of Johnson City, Tn., Carl Chafin of Cleveland, Va. and Horace Chafin of Honaker; one foster daughter, Mrs. Evia Sue Shields of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Compton of Council, Va. and Mrs. Maude Combs of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, Carl B. Smith, Sr. of Cleveland, Va.; 16 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Independence Baptist Church near Honaker with Rev. H.L. Hanshew and Rev. James Crabtree officiating. Interment followed in the Kendrick Cemetery at Route 2, Cleveland. Honaker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
