FERDINAND "FRITZ" A. NIES

Ferdinand "Fritz" A. Nies, age 85, formerly of 3509 Joseph Road, Manitowoc, died on Monday, July 27, 2009, at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc.

Fritz was born Dec. 15, 1923, in Hollandtown, son of the late Raymond and Sophie (Kerkhoff) Nies. He grew up in Greenleaf and was a graduate of East De Pere High School, class of 1941. Fritz served two years in the Navy from 1943 to 1945, and was a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans of America.

On Aug. 10, 1948, he married the former Beatrice Rose "Beaty" DeBauche at St. Luke Catholic Church, Two Rivers. They raised their family in Two Rivers where they were members of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.

Fritz was employed by Hamilton Manufacturing for 37 years, retiring in 1988. In 1990, they moved to Manitowoc and became members of Holy Innocents Catholic Church. Beatrice preceded him in death on April 10, 2006.

Fritz was presently a member of St. Francis of Assisi. He was an avid trap shooter and earned international championship status. He liked to play golf and play cards, especially the game of sheepshead. Also, he enjoyed carpentry work.

He was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law: Theresa and Louis Pansier; a sister-in-law: Laura Nies; and six brothers-in-law: Robert Lenss, Russell and Phillip DeBauche, Don Gordon, Fritz Ploor, and Elmer Biddle.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Gerald Foley with entombment at Knollwood Mausoleum, town of Kossuth. Military Rites will be accorded immediately following the service at church.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. led by Deacon Ken Nelesen. Visitation will continue Friday morning at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
