HH-53C #67-14996 from the 55th ARRS at Eglin AFB went out of control and crashed 36 miles southwest of Eglin AFB during aerial refueling and crashed in the water. All on board were killed. No other details are available at this time.

Master Sgt. William "Pappy" T. Lane was a helicopter mechanic in the United States Air Force, having joined on November 27, 1951. He served in both Korea and Vietnam. In 1969, Jackie was stationed at Eglin AFB, Florida. He was on a routine helicopter training flight; they had just completed refueling another plane when there was an explosion and the helicopter crashed into the Gulf of Mexico about 36 miles southwest of Fort Walton Beach. The pilot of another aircraft reported the helicopter "went up in a ball of fire". Jackie and 2 others, Capt. Carl W. Oliver of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., an instructor-pilot and Capt. Thomas E.
