Little is known of her childhood or about her first marriage to W.P. Maynard in 1893 except there was one child conceived which did not live. She was twenty one and Maynard was forty at the time of the marriage.
She married Thomas Henry McVay 19 January 1899 in Belleville, Yell county, Arkansas. They had four children, three boys and a girl who did not live past five years of age.
She passed in 1910, cause unknown. Sh appears on the 1910 US Census and the date there shows April as her being in the household. Her two oldest sons stated she died in 1910.
Mattie is buried in a grave marked only by a river rock which was toted to the site by her husband Thomas Henry McVay. Her two oldest sons remembered watching their dad go to the nearby creek-bed and bring back the heaviest stone he could carry.
The eldest son believed he could point out the exact stone when he visited the cemetery in the early 1970s.

Update;
Mattie was marked only by a river rock. Thanks to Jerry W. Ferguson (#47546135) for their contribution to the serious work of memorializing our families. They marked Mattie with the stone pictured. We are not truly certain of her exact location since all who were present the day the river rock was placed have passed on, but we can be proud she will now be counted as those who rest in this place eternally.
Sincerely, Thanks Jerry.
