All information is to the best of my knowledge. I have searched/researched and feel reasonably confident of what is presented below. As with all genealogy on the internet, the reader must do his own research rather than accept one person's viewpoint. I had good help from the Cheshire County Historical Society as well. Thank you!

DEACON EPHRAIM ADAMS
(Congregational Church)

Tombstone: "Blessed are the dead who Lived in the Lord"

"Ephraim was not only a good husbandman [farmer], he was prominent in town affairs and held town and school offices, and was chosen to arbitrate many disputes, as he not only had good judgment, he had a strong sense of justice. He was one of the ten men and women who met to organize the Orthodox Congregational Church in Stoddard and was the first Deacon, an office he held for life." Ephraim came to Stoddard NH about 1772 and it is said he lived on Lot 13, Range 12. Stories say he had come even earlier, as a young man, and had helped lay out the town into lots. He married twice. First, on 6 Mar, 1777, in Chelmsford, Middlesex, MA, to Betsy Pierce; second, on 26 Dec 1805 in Stoddard to Anna Adams (1754-1844), a distant cousin several times removed. Both wives are buried in Dow Hill Cemetery. There were no children by the 2nd wife.

Betsy (1751-1804) was mother to all of Ephraim's children, and was said to be a 1st cousin of Gov. Benjamin Pierce of NH, father to US Pres. Franklin Pierce. The (9) children of Emphraim and Betsy were:

EPHRAIM, JR. (1778-1802)- m. Tryphena Fisher 1801 in Stoddard
BENJAMIN (1780-1836)- m. Lucy Tuttle 1818 in Stoddard
STEPHEN (1782-1844)- m. Becca Whitcomb 1807 in Stoddard
BETSY "Betty" (1784 -1861)- m. Wm. Pitcher 1805 in Stoddard
LYDIA (1786-1803) - Never married
ESTHER (1788-1854) - m. Rev. Isaac Robinson 1810 in Stoddard
ABEL (1791-1865) - m. Sally Farnum 1819 Dublin, Cheshire, NH
JOEL (1794-1858) - m. Amy Burgess 1818 Belfast, Waldo, ME
JONAS (1794-1861) - m. Betsy M. Davis 1819

Google and read online:
"The History of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, 1735-1914 : with genealogical records of the principal families" (1914)

Dea. Ephraim Adams and others of his family are mentioned on several pages of the above book by searching by name. Esp. interesting are Pgs. 99-100 which deal with "Deacon Adam's Resolution", whereby he made a stand for clothing the local soldiers fighting in the Rev. War during the winter months. He was elected Selectman several times and held the position of Town Clerk many times as well.

He descended from Henry Adams of Braintree MA, through Henry's 3rd son, Capt. Samuel Adams , then his son Benjamin (son of father Samuel's 2nd wife/Sparhawk), and then Benjamin's son John, father of Deacon Ephraim Adams.

Henry Adams of Braintree (Mem. #11014343, some information incorrect there, I believe), who arrived from England sometime about 1632 with (8) sons and a daughter and wife, is said to be the "largest progenitor of the Adams family in America". He was also the forefather (through his 7th son, Joseph) of both Presidents John and John Quincy Adams.

Ephraim's own family line is detailed in another online book, "A Genealogical History of Henry Adams of Braintree, Mass. and his descendants". The same book lists all of his children and other vital statistics. His birth was recorded in the Vital Records of Chelmsford MA, as well as his parents' names and his marriage to his 1st wife, Betsy.

It appears he was also a participant in the Revolutionary War. The DAR genealogy site lists him as:

NEW HAMPSHIRE Rank(s): CIVIL SERVICE, TEAMSTER

Death: 4-28-1823 STODDARD NEW HAMPSHIRE
