Son of Nathaniel and Mary (Woodworth) Coffin, he married first Mary/Francis Darnell 20 Sep 1860 in Posey Co, IN, and 2dly Mary Wagner Niederst 23 Sep 1888 in Posey Co., IN.

CAPTAIN OF ROYAL PIERCE DEAD

WAS KNOWN FROM ONE END OF THE OHIO TO THE OTHER

Captain Levi Coffin of the towboat Royal Pierce, died Saturday night at 9:45 o'clock at his home, 112 Upper Water street. Mr. Coffin had been sick less than a week. Not until Saturday morning, however, did his trouble assume a dangerous aspect. He suffered from a complication of diseases brought on by Bright's disease.


Captain Coffin was known from one end of the Ohio river to the other. He also had an extensive acquaintance on the lower Mississippi. Wherever he was known he was liked. He had been a tow boat captain for a number of years. At the time of his death he was in the employ of Captain Frank Tardy.


Captain Coffin was 60 years old. He leaves a wife and four children.

CAPTAIN COFFIN'S SERVICE FOR COUNTRY IS NOT FORGOTTEN

FUNERAL OF LATE STEAMBOAT MAN LARGELY ATTENDED

All that was mortal of the late Captain Levi Coffin, the veteran steamboat man, was laid to rest at Oak Hill cemetery Monday afternoon.


The funeral took place from the family residence at 112 Water street, being under the auspices of the Odd Fellows. the services were largely attended.


Captain Coffin was a soldier in the late way. In his death the flag of his country was thrown around the casket. Many of the members of Farragut post, G.A. R., called to view the remains.


Captain Coffin was a good man and at all times was loyal to duty. Captain Tardy says he never had a more faithful man in his employ.
