Thomas J at the age of 19 enlisted on August 19, 1864 in Ironton Ohio as a Private to serve in Co K 173rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He mustered in on September 15, 1864 at Gallipolis by Capt. McLoughlin. He mustered out on June 26, 1865 in Nashville, TN.
