Helen graduated from Salina High School in 1938. On November 6, 1940, she married William Henry Graves in Salina. He preceded her in death on March 18, 2005.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Bruce Mayo Jr. and Leonard Eugene Mayo.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Graves Reese (Mark C. Reese); son, William Preston Graves (Linda Richey Graves); her three grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Reese, Garrett Adam Reese and Katherine Preston Graves; five nieces and nephews, Nancy Leeanne Mayo, Betty Jean Mayo Wilsie, Ernest Bruce Mayo, Steven Harold Mayo and Theresa Helene Mayo Molossi.
While in Salina, Mrs. Graves was active in many organizations. She served on the boards of Asbury Hospital, United Way, Saline County Cancer Society, Kansas Wesleyan Foundation and the YWCA. She was a member of Chapter ED PEO. She was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church and a member of Salina Country Club. She was active in the Republican Party and most proud of her son who served as a two-term governor of the state of Kansas. She was a shining light in the city of Salina, both in her volunteer activities and her philanthropy. Her latest endeavor was the W.H. and Helen M. Graves Blood Platelet Center, which was dedicated in August 2007.
Helen moved to Centennial in 2007 and lived at Holly Creek Retirement Community. She enjoyed all the many activities and met many new friends as well as reconnected with a high school classmate. She enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and was very involved in their lives.
