ANOTHER VICTIM
L. C. ABBOTT OF MT. AUBURN RUN DOWN BY THE CARS
Lyman C. Abbott of Mt. Auburn was killed by freight train No. 8 on the B.C.R & N. Friday last while attempting to drive across what is known as the Cowell crossing near Vinton.
It is thought the Mr. Abbott who was on his way to Vinton to bring home his wife daughters who are attending school at Telford Academy, under estimated the speed of the train and attempting to cross the track before it was struck. The horse was thrown about 5 rods outside the fence, the running gear of the bugs was scattered along the track and the top of the buggy with the body of Mr. Abbott was thrown on the pilot of the engine and remained in that position until the train stopped Death must have been instantaneous for when the train stopped, Mr. Abbott was found to be dead, latter investigation showed the brain had been fractured.
The deceased was 74 years of age and had recently been married for the second time. He was one of the pioneers of this section, having settled in Benton County in 1853. He was well to do financially and had recently retired from the farm and had built him a new house in Mt. Auburn. He was of a rugged constitution and was the father of a large family. HIs funeral which occurred Sunday from the Christian Church was very largely attended. The interment took place in Rose Mound Cemetery.

Obituary: 1 Oct 1897 Account of Loyal Chauncey Abbott's death
L.C. Abbott, of Mt. Auburn, Iowa attempts to cross a railroad crossing ahead of a train and is cought and instantly killed. Friday afternoon, as Mr.L.C. Abbott of Mt. Auburn was coming to Vinton driving a single horse, he under took to cross the Correll crossing at the northwest corner of town. He miscalculated the distance and was thrown a considerable distance and died a short time after the accident.
The train was running at a good speed and Mr. Abbott's body was pretty badly mangled. It was thrown against and caught on the top of the cowcatcher, as was also the buggy. The train which was a heavy freight was stopped as soon as possible. the body was left on the cow-catcher and brought to the depot, which was only a short distance. The body was taken into the depot and the relatives immediately notified.
From all the facts we could gather this death was caused by the miscalculation of Mr. Abbott or the horse becoming over excited. The road coming in from Mt. Auburn runs parallel with the railroad for quite a distance before it reaches this crossing so that the train can be seen. The trainmen say that when Mr. Abbott got near the crossing he stopped his horse as though he intended to wait and let the train pass first. Then, evidently thinking the train was far enough back to let him pass, started his horse again and met the train square on the crossing.
Mr. Abbott was one of the pioneers of the county and a man greatly respected in his section of the country. By frugality and industry he had accumulated a competence. He was somewhat over 70 years of age and has family of grown children. He had been married again but a short time and was living in Mt. Auburn, having retired from active farm live. The funeral was held in Mt.Auburn yesterday.
