Thomas served as a Musician with the 110 New York Infantry Company-F. He enlisted on August 7, 1862 in Hannibal, New York at age 19. On August 25, 1862 he was promoted to Musician. Later he was reduced to ranks as a Private. On June 16, 1863 he was taken prisoner of war at Fausse Point, Louisiana. He was paroled and later discharged on August 28, 1865. He also served as a flag holder for the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC.
