Together the family operated a general store and farm on Hopkins Street, with the homestead attached to the store. The land also produced cows, chickens, hogs and horses, in addition to the many fruits and vegetables they were able to grow. After the death of her husband in 1938 the store soon ceased to operate, the land was taken in by the city and most of the animals had to go. The land lost it's ability to function as a farm. As time went by the building structures began to rot and decay, falling into a bad state of disrepair. They were eventually demolished and the land sold at public auction in 2016.
Not far from the old homestead Charlotte moved to a home on San Antonio Street bought for her by her sons. She lived there with her second husband Earl William Connelly, until her death.
Lottie could speak fluent High German, was an excellent cook and was the book keeper and overall accountant for the general store. Family stories reveal her husband John could neither read or write. She was said to be the true brains of this operation.
1900 Hays Co., TX census shows John R. O'Bryant and wife Lillie and daughter, Martha J. (see TXDC#25590) stating John and Lillie have been married for 5 years.
1910 Hays Co., TX. census shows John R. O'Bryant as married 2X present marriage for 1 year; wife-Lottie, mother of 1 child-1 living; daughter-Martha; & son-John R. O'Bryant, Jr.
