M.D. Chilton was born in Greensboro, Alabama in 1846 according to Confederate Home Roster records. Chilton's family moved to Marlin, Texas in 1851 where the family worked as farmers. Chilton joined the Confederate Army at the age of 16 in Courtney, Texas on March 23, 1863. Records state that his occupation at the time of enlistment was schoolboy. He served in the Trans Mississippi Army as a private in Company B, Madison's Regiment of the Texas Cavalry, third regiment of the Arizona Brigade. After a brief period of service, Chilton was discharged November 23, 1863 for reasons of general disability. After being discharged, Chilton moved back to Marlin where Confederate roster records state he worked as a farmer and was married. No record of his spouse has been found. Chilton was admitted to the Confederate Veterans Home in Austin, Texas on August 8, 1913. He lived at the home until his death on March 19, 1918.
