Christian had one brother, Joseph, and six sisters: Catharine, Magdelena, Caroline, Anna, Mary, & Fanny.

After purchasing and later renting farmland in Ford County, Illinois with his brother Joseph, Christian met and married Augusta Catherine Erp on November 2, 1885. After eleven years, he moved the family to Magor Township, Hancock County, Iowa.

Christian and Augusta raised six children: William John, Louis Walter, Joseph Milo, Reuben, Laura E., and Erwin Christian. All the children were born in Ford County, Illinois except for Erwin who was born after the family moved to Iowa.
