He was a veteran of the civil
war having enlisted in the
beginning of that struggle, in
the 48th Georgia regiment
of Infantry. By his courage
and capacity to command
men, he soon rose from the
ranks to the captaincy of
his company. He was engaged
in nearly all of the great
battles of the Army of Northern
Virginia, and was wounded
on four different occasions
in the seven days fight around
Richmond, in 1862, in the
second battle of Manassas,
Gettysburg and around Peters
burg in 1864. He was one of
the number of that small but
heroic band that surrendered at
Appomattox in 1865. No braver
or truer Confederate ever
drew sword in defence of the
south.
