Son of Nathaniel Goodwin and Ruth Shaw.

Married to Ellen Watson Davis on June 7, 1814 in Boston, MA. No children.

He served as a minister in Sandwich from 1811-1812. On March 17, 1813 he was ordained as pastor of the First Congregational Church and Society in Sandwich, Mass. He was pastor for the next 20 years.
