Roman Catholic Bishop. He was the son of Patrick J. Daley and Marcy C. Murphy. He was educated at the Seminary of Saint Charles Borromeo, Overbrook, Philadelphia, and was ordained to the priesthood in Philadelphia in 1941, by Dennis Cardinal Dougherty. After pastoral assignments in Philadelphia, Daley served a tour of duty in Korea as chaplain in the United States Army and in the PA National Guard. Following return to civilian life, he was assistant pastor at Saint Matthew, Philadelphia, and served until 1960 when he was named Vice Rector of Saint Charles Seminary. He was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Harrisburg in Philadelphia in 1964, by Archbishop John J. Krol,and Bishop George L. Leech of Harrisburg. He attended the third and fourth sessions of the Vatican Council. Leech appointed Daley the Vicar General of Harrisburg in 1964. He became Coadjutor Bishop of Harrisburg with right of succession in 1967. Daley became Harrisburg's bishop in 1971. From 1969 through his tenure as bishop, he served as president of the PA Catholic Conference. He served on committees of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the board of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D. C. When Daley was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he spoke openly of his illness, focusing on the purpose of life, the inevitability of death, the redemptive value of suffering and the reality of the promise of eternal life.
