EDWARD SCHROEDER

Edward L. Schroeder, age 88, of New Holstein, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Willowdale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Holstein.

He was born June 22, 1918, in Collins, Wis., a son of the late John and Hatie (Schroeder) Schroeder. Edward attended Collins Grade School. He graduated from Reedsville High School in 1936 and from the Manitowoc County Normal School in 1938.

On Nov. 8, 1941, he married Dorothy Kasper in Hilbert; she preceded him in death on April 7, 2003.

Edward taught at the Maple Rock and Poplar Grove School in the town of Rockland for five years.

Ed and his wife, Dorothy, were the fourth generation of the Schroeder family to own and operate the homestead farm in Collins from 1943 until their retirement in 1981. In addition to farming, the couple prepared income taxes for 59 years. In 1988, they sold the farm and moved to New Holstein.

In 1961, Edward was elected chairman of the town of Rockland, a position he held until 1987. Edward had also served as president and vice president for the Manitowoc County Towns Association and as a representative for the state association. He also served on the Manitowoc County Board in several positions: supervisor, chairman on the committee for agriculture, soil and water, county fair and social service committees. He served as liaison for the county on the Handicapped Children Board for which he was instrumental in the building of a school in the county that attended to the special needs of some of the county's children.

Edward was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Holstein.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; his son-in-law, Grover Maltby; four brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2007, at St. John United Church of Christ in New Holstein. The Rev. James E. Werner, pastor, will officiate. Entombment will be in the Knollwood Mausoleum in Manitowoc. Friends may call at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Ave.,
New Holstein, on Wednesday, March 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The Sippel Funeral Home in New Holstein is assisting the family.
