Earl S. Carper, 87, rural Tyrone, died Monday afternoon at his residence.
He was born in Huntingdon Furnace, son of the late Samuel A. and Mary (Harpster) Carper. He was married to Madeline Diehl on April 7, 1948, by Father J.P. Flynn at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Newry.
Surviving are his wife; eight children: Lorraine (Bill) Fenton of Philipsburg, Marjorie Vaught of Tyrone, Victoria (Paul) Misko of Altoona, Jeanette (Gary) Keefer of Hollidaysburg, Timothy (Natalie) of Chenango Forks, N.Y., Benjamin (Cathy) of Edgewater, Md., James (Sharon) of Plainwell, Mich., and Caroline (Dave) Dow of Sykesville, Md.; and 19 grandchildren: Hope Ray, Scott Fenton, Devon Burket, Jeremy Carper, Ben Misko, Jacqueline Heaton, Mike Misko, Ian Carper, Brenton Carper, Kelsey Carper, Shane Carper, Matthew Keefer, Adam Carper, Melissa Rosso, Jessica Carper, Andrew Carper, Dorothy Dow, Kate Dow and Davey Dow.
Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren: Natasha Ray, Holly Ray, Brandie Ray, Shaylea Burket, Allyson Fenton, Braeden Fenton, Piper Carper, Eli Keith, Addison Heaton and Bryson Heaton; a brother, Howard of Baltimore, Md.; and two sisters: Sophronia David and Alberta Huff, both of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline; a grandson, Joseph Keefer; four brothers: Norman, Arthur, Wilson and Percy; and two sisters: Geraldine Meek and Arietta Couch.
Earl was a 1943 graduate of Warriors Mark High School and served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He had been employed by the W.C. Morrow Farm Implement Co. and retired in 1991 as a machinist from Chicago Rivet Co. after 27 years of service.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and a life member of St. Gregory Council, Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the national grange and of the Sinking Valley Grange, in which he had held various offices and had been honored by being named "Granger of the Year." He was a member of the local and national AARP and of the Marine Corps League and was a former member of Howard Gardner American Legion Post 281 and Sinking Valley Volunteer Fire Company.
Earl was an avid hunter, enjoyed gardening and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday, March 15, 2013, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Father Jozef Kovacik as celebrant. Interment with flag presentation by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Newry.
