Melvin J. Kohler, 86, formerly of N. 10th Street, Easton, died Saturday, Oct. 16, in ManorCare Health Services, Palmer Township. He was the husband of Betty I. "Bessie" (Odenwelder) Kohler, who died in 1997.

He was a supervisor for parks and public property for the city of Easton for 18 years until retiring in 1977.

Previously, he was an employee of the Easton Area School District maintenance department and the former Butcher American Stores and Electric Sanitary Laundry, both of Easton, and a bakery driver.

Born in Easton, he was a son of the late Jacob and Anna (Houseberg) Kohler.

He was a member of Nazareth Moravian Church.

A life member of the PIAA, he was a baseball umpire for the Blue Mountain League and American Legion League and at high school and college games.

Kohler helped form the Easton Vols of the Blue Mountain League and was head of the Easton Sideline Football Chain Gang for more than 30 years.

He was the business manager of the former Trade Union Basketball team, Easton, in the 1940s.

A charter member of the Varsity E Club, Easton, he received the Billy Brotzman Award in 1985. He was inducted into the Blue Mountain League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Northampton County American Legion Hall of Fame in 1996.

He was a member of the Easton Elks Lodge.

Survivors: Two sons, one of Hanover Township and one of Easton, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
