Bernice A. Lowery was born at Hurford, Ind., November 27, 1840 and died at her home three miles southwest of Delphos December 28, 1924, aged 84 years, one month and one day.

On November 21, 1857, she was married to John S. Hollis at Bloomington, Ill. To them was born 12 children, seven of them are living, namely John C., of Minneapolis; Alva Thomas and Mary, of Delphos, Mrs. Etna Brown, Mrs. Ola Hurtig, and Mrs. E.J. Hurtig.

In 1876 they moved to Iowa and in 1870 moved to Kansas settling on the homestead where the husband died June 12, 1922.Fifty-two years they spent together on this home which they made out of the virgin prairie. Here they were a part of that noble self-sacrificing band of heroic men and women that made out of the “Great American Desert” a country peopled with their children, beautiful homes, villages, school houses and churches.

In early life she confessed her faith in her Savior and associated with the Christian Church and her life has been an honor to that confession.

Memorial services were held in the M.E. Church December 31, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by G.S. Smith and the pastor. Interment in the Delphos Cemetery beside her husband.
