John Hartzell Arndt met sudden death about 4.30 yesterday afternoon near Hummelstown where he was working for Swanger & White, State road contractors of Lebanon. Mr. Arndt, during the past summer worked for this firm on the building of the Newport-Bloomfield road and accepted a position with them on their road job thru Hummelstown, at which place he had worked only about 10 days, when the fatal accident occurred. Mr. Arndt was digging along a stream of water preparatory to the construction of a bridge when a land slide occurred almost entirely burying Mr. Arndt and crushing his chest. Only last Sunday he spent the week end at his home here and on Thursday Oct. 15, 1925 would have celebrated his 50th birthday anniversary. He was the son of Kunkle and Susan Lobaugh Arndt and was born in Liverpool, but removed to Newport with his mother as a boy, after his father's death. He had spent most of his life in this place, altho he made two trips to the west where he was employed and also lived with his mother and family in Harrisburg for a short time. In addition to his mother he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alma Smith and Miss Mae Arndt, all living at the Arndt home on Market street. Funeral services will be held at his late home here Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock with interment in Newport cemetery, Rev. F. L. Artley officiating. About one year ago the only brother in this family died in the person W. H. Arndt of Marysville.
