May, as she was known by, was the daughter of David Lewis Rathburn and Alcinda Evans of Ames, Athens, Ohio. May's first marriage was to Thomas E. White of Alexander, Athens, Ohio. They were married 9 June 1881 in Athens County. Two daughters were born to Tom and May: Jessie Alcinda White in 1884, and Gertrude White in 1886. After Tom died in 1888, May married the widow John E. Parmiter of Bern, Athens, Ohio on 26 April 1890. The children of John and May were: Ferol, Eva, Jewett, John and Eddyth. All seven children grew to adulthood to have families of their own. The family lived on a very large farm in Bern, Athens, Ohio. I remember Grandma Parmiter as being old and frail, having a pleasant, gentle smile, and rather quiet -- she was much loved by those who knew her well.
