He was a retired farmer and retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Pikeview Baptist Church and attended Magnolia Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and he was a 53-year member of Gavel Lodge No. 570 F&AM in Magnolia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Bruce and Myrtle Shelton Chelf and a brother, William Holbert Chelf.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Chelf; a son, Michael (Denise) Chelf of Houston; two grandsons, Michael Shane (Andrea) Chelf and Marc Shawn Chelf, all of Houston; a great-grandson, Grayson Luke Chelf; and several nieces and nephews.
