Son of John and Flavilla (Hamilton) McKenzie, E.P. was a prominent apple grower and farmer, and in 1893 he helped to sponsor and build the Methodist (M.P.) Church of Wakelee, of which he was a faithful member. In 1883, he married Emma Jane Elsey, daughter of David and Margaret Elsey, who preceded him in death in 1905. He then married Lillie Ethel Brown, daughter of Philo and Zelia Brown, in May of 1908.

To Edwin and Emma were born five children: Elsie M. McKenzie Brown Moorlag, Lizzie Claire McKenzie Beck, Russell H. McKenzie, Howard J. McKenzie, and Mary M. McKenzie Streip.

To Edwin and Lillie were born four children: Philo E. McKenzie, Kenneth L. McKenzie, Ray M. McKenzie, and Ilah Bird McKenzie Essex.
