Lord Gordon, 2nd but 1st surviving son of Sir Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly and Jean Stewart. Grandson of George Gordon (Seton) and Elizabeth Hay, Sir John Stewart and Margaret Douglas, daughter of Archibald Douglas.


Husband of Margaret Stewart, illegitimate daughter of King James IV by his mistress, Margaret Drummond, daughter of Lord John Drummond. They married before 26 April 1510, the date of the marriage grant, and had three sons;

* George Earl of Huntly, 4th Earl of Moray

* Alexander Bishop of the Isles, Bishop of Galloway and Archbishop of Athens

* James Chancellor of Moray.


John and Margaret were granted Badenoch and other lands by her father, the king, in 1510.


After John died in 1517 Margaret married Sir John Drummond of Innerpeffray.
