John Abbit (Abbott) was among the first 10 volunteers for the Pittsgrove Company of the Salem, New Jersey, Militia under Captain Jacob DuBois in the American Revolution. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Harding (Harden) and his second marriage was to Rebecca Chattin (Rebekah Chatten). John and Elizabeth had one child, Thomas. John and Rebecca had seven children: Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Martha, Isaac, John, and David.
