Charles T. Gaffney, for many years one of the most active business men of this city died this afternoon at his residence, 154 High Street after an illness of long duration. Death was the result of an illness which had afflicted Mr. Gaffney for several years and for the past six weeks he had been confined to his home, his condition growing steadily worse. Last evening he was stricken with a severe attack and it was apparent that the end was not far off. This morning it was evident that his death was a matter of but a few hours and shortly after 2 o'clock this afternoon he breathed his last.
Mr. Gaffney was born in this city, the son of John and Ann Gaffney. The undertaking business to which he succeeded, was established by his father, 47 year ago and at the age of 16 he became connected with the establishment, succeeding his father as proprietor when he passed away some years later. Always honest in his business dealings and a man whose qualities were those that go to make up a very active citizen, he was a man who was universally recognized and one whose death will occasion sincere regret.
Mr. Gaffney was a member of many societies and those organizations with which he was affiliated were Taunton Court M.C.O.F., Division 2, A.O.H., Wolfe Tone Club, Taunton Council, K. of C., Taunton Lodge B.P.O. Elks and St. Mary's Holy Name Society.
He leaves a widow and three children, Nellie G., Marion and Frank and also three sisters, Mrs. Alfred Webber, Mrs. John Madden of Boston and Mrs. William Healey of Waltham. He was in his 50th year.
