In 1949, he became the first pastor of Woodsons Gap Baptist Church. He also served as pastor of eight other churches in Campbell County. He worked as a coal miner for 22 years and as a construction worker for 20 years, before his retirement in 1974. He was the pastor of Long Hollow Baptist Church for 12 years.
Rev. Carroll was well known as an evangelist throughout Campbell County and many surrounding communities. His funeral was held on Friday, October 5, 1979 at 2pm at Long Hollow Baptist Church in La Follette. The service was given by Rev. O.D. Hill and Rev. Kelly Heatherly. He was buried at Bakers Forge Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Martin Funeral Home in La Follette, TN.
