Wesley Turner Berryman, Jr. of Newport News, a graphic artist, calligrapher, and sometime painter, passed away on January 21, 2017 at the age of 96.

Wesley was a native of Newport News and the son of the late Wesley T., Sr. and Mary Shackelford Berryman.

He graduated from Newport News High School and graduated from The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School.

After serving two years in the U.S. Army during World War II, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA degree in commercial art. He was employed with an advertising art firm in Richmond for a short time before accepting employment with NACA, which later became NASA, from which he retired in 1983. After four years with Science and Technology, Inc., Wesley had been a free-lance graphic artist and calligrapher ever since. He taught calligraphy for four years at Thomas Nelson Community College and was a part-time employee at the Mariners' Museum in the 40's and 50's. While at NASA, Wesley designed many covers for the AirScoop and other publications as well as many outstanding technical illustrations and exhibits. Logos was one of his specialties and he was especially proud of the ships seals he designed for the aircraft carrier, Theodore Roosevelt and the submarine, Newport News.

As an avid tennis player most of his life, it was natural that he was called to design the logo for the Peninsula Tennis Patrons Association. For years, Berryman won many medals for tennis in the Virginia Senior Games. All his life Wesley was an entertainer and vocalist. In high school, he was drum major of the band and played leading roles in musical productions as well as in the Newport News Operatic Society. For many years, he has given vocal presentations to civic groups, retirement and nursing homes. Several times each year he was soloist at the Veterans Affairs Chapel in Hampton. As an active member of First United Methodist Church, Berryman has been a lay reader, usher, song leader for the Bithynia Class and other leadership roles through the years. He was a one-time volunteer at the Virginia Air and Space Center and held a membership in the following: The Mainers' Museum, The Peninsula Fine Arts Center, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Virginia Historical Society, The Virginia War Museum, The Hampton History Museum and The Apprentice and University of Georgia Alumni Associations.

In addition to his parents, one sister, Mildred Nelson and his one niece, Mary Sue Nelson preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving wife for over sixty years, Lois Hayes; one daughter, Janis Bradfield and her husband Philip; two grandchildren, Graham Berryman Bradfield and Emily Parker Bradfield; three nephews, Jack, Lloyd and Douglas Nelson and other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle and he will be greatly missed. A memorial service conducted by Reverend Robert Haley will be held Saturday, January 28 at First United Methodist Church with a reception to follow.

Arrangements are in care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
