John was a businessman and served for several years as a Select Councilman on the City Council of Corry. There were many articles in the Corry Journal concerning his business and social life. Picture of him was taken in 1909, same picture in the History of Corry publication.

1860 - Sheffield Township, Ashtabula, Ohio Census, John 4, with parents John Shiele 37, Mary 32, brother George 1. Only census stating born in Germany, all others state Ohio.

1870 - Corry Census, John 14, with parents John and Mary, brother George 12, and sister Mary 9.

1878 - Married Elisa Fox, daughter of Augusta Myers and Frederick Fox.

1879 - Birth of daughter Carrie Marie Sheely.

1880 - Corry Census , John 24, Lizzie 23, daughter Carrie 10 months. [Named spelled Shiley on this census.]

1880 - October, birth of son John F. Sheely.

1900 - Corry Census, John 44, Lizzie 43, Carrie 20 and John F. 19. They state they were married 22 years, John b. Ohio, House Painter. Living with them is Mary Sauer Sheely, John's mother, 72, widowed.

1902 - November 29th --- Corry Journal - "A CITIZEN ASSAULTED - Thursday ... as John Sheely was going to a lodge meeting he was brutally assualted on Main street ... by drunken thugs from Titusville ... Mr. Sheely was walking ... accosted ... another stepped up ... taking him entirely unaware, struck him a vicious blow with brass knuckles ... under the right eye ... sending him reeling some distance ... inflicted a serious injury, requiring the attention of a physician. ... Mr. Sheely was mistaken for Earl Brown whom the Titusville parties wished to pound on account of the way he played ball with their men at the afternoon game."

1906 - October 30 --- Corry Journal - "J.M. Sheely is moving his paint and wall paper stock today from the Harris building into his new store on Main street ..."

1907- July 20 --- Corry Journal - "The Philadelphia North American contains an item to the effect that John Sheely is attending the Elks convention in that city and action by the Corry city councils ... is being held until Mr. Sheely returns."

1909 - July 20 --- Corry Journal - "Councilman Sheely wants to know how it is that dogs know that he is 'agin' them. One jumped out and grapped him, tearing his clothing this morning as he was getting off his bicycle. ... no objection to their bitting Mayor Alexander, Postmaster Austin or even Editor Porter, but as far as Mr. Sheely ... like to have the muzzling ordinance enforced."

1909 - September 7 --- Corry Journal - "HELD FOR COURT -" John Sheely, Sr., made an information against Mrs. D. ... of West Main street, charging her running a disordely house. ... evidence sufficient to hold the woman for the Sept., term of court in $300 bail."

1910 - Corry Census, John 55, Lizzie 52.

1918 - July 6 --- Corry Journal - "J. M. SHEELY WILL REMAIN - ... report erroneous that he is closing out his business as Mr. Sheely has erected a shop near his home on East Main street, ... will do contract papering and painting. ... closing out his stock in his present store."

1920 - Corry Census , John 63, Lizzie 62, living with them is her sister Carrie Fox 62.

1920 - October 19 - Corry Journal - "Mr. and Mrs. John Sheely ... started this morning on a motor trip to Daytona, FL where they spend every winter ..."

1923 - June 23 --- Corry Journal - "LAND BIG MUSKY AT FINDLEY LAKE - John M. Sheely and C. Fox landed a fine muscallonge at Findley Lake early this morning. ... weighted 27 1/2 lbs and is one of the finest fish taken ... in recent seasons."

1925 - April 22 --- Corry Journal - "ENROUTE FROM FLORIDA, CORRY AUTO IN-CRASH - Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Sheely Are painfully Injured In Accident Near Harrisburg - Reached City Late Tuesday - ... serious ... their machine, an Oakland car, was being driven by a garage man ... during a heavy storm ... car skidded ... ploughed into a bank. ... Mr. Sheely suffered a bad gash on the wrist and another severe cut to close just under left eye, rib also cracked. ... Mrs. Sheely suffered a fractured rib, minor bruises and a severe shaking up. ... car badly damaged ..."

1925 - Son John F. died in Daytona, FL.

"J.M. SHEELY PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING - Death Claims Another Well Known Citizen and Former Business Man - Served in Council For Several Years.

Mr. Sheely was 70 years of age,and had been in ailing health for the past eighteen months, his condition gradually growing more serious during recent weeks. ... born in Ohio, deceased had spent practically his entire life in this city, being actively identified with community's progress and serving the city for a number of years as Councilman ...

Well and favorably known throughtout this vicinity and the possessor of a jovial disposition, the deceased had a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who will regret to learn of his death. He was a past exalted ruler of the Corry Lodge of Elks of which he was an active member in former years, and also a member of the Maccabees of this city. ... Widow and one daughter, Mrs. Frank A. Wilcox. ..."

"FUNERAL SERVICES FOR JOHN SHEELEY - Funeral Held From Late Home On East Main Street This Afternoon ... Largely attended funeral services in memory of John M. Sheely ... The Christian Science service was read by Mrs. Florence Tillotson. ... many beautiful flowers arranged about the casket at the home.

Interment was made in Pine Grove Cemetery ... pall bearers were nephews including: Edward, Lewis, Clarence and Andrew Peterson; Carl and Chester Fox. Attending: Mr and Mrs T.C. Fox, Mrs Dora Peterson, Mr and Mrs Carl Fox, Chester Fox of Jamestown, NY, Mrs Lester Wright of Warren."
