According to Bill Gawne in an email to Cherie J. dated 27 March 2013: "Dan was in the oil business. He was in Texas City when the ship blew up in port, in 1947. He was very nearly killed by that, having been down at the dock fighting the fire just half an hour before it blew. He'd gone off the fire line to grab a quick bite to eat."
That's considered to be the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history.

Dan and Frances resided in Berwick, Saint Mary Parish, Louisiana during their latter years.
