Hermon was not long a resident of Owego. Two of his brothers, William and Nathan had established a branch store at Trumansburg Tompkins Co., in 1805. In Dec. of that year when but 18 years old he was to manage the store and lived there the rest of his life. He was sheriff of Seneca Co. 28 Jan. 1817 and upon the formation of Tompkins Co. in April of 1817, he was appointed sheriff of the new Co. Non. 1919 he was elected member of assembly of Tompkins Co., president of Tompkins Co. Bank at Ithaca for several years. He was a firm temperance man and the first merchant who discontinued the sale of liquor. He was president of the state temperance society 1851 - 1852.
