Born in Oswego, Kansas his family moved west when he was just an infant. At about 16 or 17 he worked for the first Spokane firm to grind optical lenses. Shortly thereafter he obtained his optometrist license. In 1906, he married Ann and moved to Clarkston, Washington in 1910. He set up his first optometry business in Lewiston, Idaho two years later. He continued in his chosen profession until he was over 80 years old.
