Gloria Mae Selby was born July 30, 1928 in Connersville, Indiana to Alfred and Hilda (Border) Selby. Gloria graduated from Connersville High School in 1946, and from Reid School of Nursing in Richmond, Indiana in 1948.

Gloria met her first husband, Hobart Mardel Brinkley, while she was working as a student nurse at Reid Memorial Hospital, and was helping to care for his father Harold who had suffered a stroke. They also knew each other from Mardel's work was an intern for a local funeral home. They married in 1948, and lived in Ohio until 1960 when they moved to Oceanside, CA.

For over 35 years, Gloria worked as a registered nurse, specializing as a surgical RN, with her favorite surgeries being orthopedics and cardiac care. She worked at Palomar Memorial Hospital in Escondido, CA, and Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, CA. She fondly recalls having studied and/or worked with some of the finest doctors and surgeons in their fields, including Dr. Albert Sabin, the founder of the first oral polio vaccine that bears his name and is still in use today. She was also active in the local Emblem Club for many years.

Gloria and Mardel divorced in 1966, and in 1971 she remarried, to Elias Velasquez, who passed away June 19, 2010.

Though she suffered for many years from severe rheumatoid arthritis, Gloria will always be remembered for her loving smile, her quick wit (especially when discussing politics!) and her deep love and devotion to her family. Though her body was crippled, the good Lord blessed her with a strong mind and spirit that carried her through to the very end.

I love you Mom!
