Creston Orville Garner, 85, of Solomons, MD died July 1, 2007, at his residence.

He was born on January 7, 1922, in Dowell to the late Benjamin Creston and Susie Victoria Hardesty Garner. He was a lifelong resident of Calvert County.

He joined the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II from July 1944 to September 1946. He was an avid reader and was also known as ‘‘Mr. Wordsmith,” as he was virtually a walking thesaurus.

He was active in many organizations and clubs throughout Southern Maryland, including Alcoholics Anonymous, American Legion, Telephone Pioneers, St. Paul United Methodist Church, and he was a charter member of the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years; three sons, two daughters, three brothers, two sisters, two aunts, eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Doris Garner O’Neal and Elayne Garner Duff.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, July 7, with the Reverend John Williams officiating. Interment took place in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lusby.
